Buying a vehicle in Melbourne, relocating from Newcastle, or arranging the reverse move? A useful transport quote starts with who will release the car, where it is located and who can receive it. This page covers Newcastle to Melbourne and Melbourne to Newcastle without assuming the same service or price in each direction.

Pickup and delivery options

Handover options depend on the location and selected service. Capital cities and larger centres may offer depot or address collection and delivery. In smaller towns, handover may be at your address, through a local agent or at an agreed meeting point with the driver. Your quote confirms the available arrangement. The enclosed-network depots listed on this page identify transport connections; they are not necessarily your pickup or delivery handover points.

Enclosed transport and connecting legs

Enclosed transport is available between capital-city depots in both directions. Townsville is also part of this enclosed depot network and is treated as a capital-city depot for quoting purposes.

For Newcastle–Melbourne, the enclosed option combines these legs in either direction:

  • Newcastle ↔ Sydney depot: standard carrier.
  • Sydney depot ↔ Melbourne depot: enclosed transport.

Moving Cars arranges the full journey, including the standard-carrier connections; you do not need to organise those legs separately. This is a mixed enclosed/standard service, not enclosed transport for the entire journey.

To request enclosed rates, obtain a standard vehicle quote, then reply requesting an enclosed upgrade. Confirm the depot locations, enclosed leg and any standard-carrier connections before booking. The initial standard quote does not book an enclosed service. See the enclosed enquiry guide.

Newcastle to Melbourne

Enter Newcastle as the collection location and Melbourne as the destination, with the actual suburbs or postcodes. If the pickup is elsewhere in the Hunter region, enter that location rather than substituting Newcastle: the handover arrangements need to match where the car really is.

For delivery in Melbourne, think about access as well as the address. Tell us if the receiving location has an apartment car park, height restriction, narrow entry or limited stopping space. Ask which collection or delivery arrangement is available before organising someone to wait there.

Melbourne to Newcastle

Enter Melbourne as the collection location and Newcastle as the destination. If you are buying from a dealership or private seller, confirm when the vehicle will be ready for release and who can hand over its keys. A transport request does not confirm that the seller has completed the sale or authorised collection.

At the Newcastle end, nominate a receiving contact and check their availability. If your address is outside Newcastle, specify it in the request. Do not assume a quote to a city depot includes onward delivery to another town.

Buying a car you have not collected yourself

Get the make, model, body type and condition from the seller before requesting transport. Ask about modifications, low clearance, a flat battery, missing keys or anything that could prevent normal loading. Describe the actual condition rather than simply calling it a used car.

Agree who will record the condition at collection and keep any seller photos alongside the carrier’s handover record. Transport arrangements do not replace your own purchase inspection or agreement with the seller.

Compare the complete door or depot option

If a depot option is offered, check the address, opening hours, release instructions and how you will travel after dropping off or collecting the car. Compare that with any address service offered, including access limitations and charges in the quote.

For a workplace pickup or delivery, establish whether staff can attend during the agreed window and whether the carrier can use the site. Flag restricted access before booking, not when the carrier arrives.

Price and timing: what to ask

Request a price for your direction, dates, vehicle and handover points. An estimate for a different vehicle or the opposite direction may not apply. Read the inclusions, conditions and possible additional charges; our cost guide explains how to compare the whole job.

Ask for the collection window and delivery estimate separately. Explain a fixed work-start date or onward travel commitment before accepting the service. Keep a backup transport plan if the car is essential immediately after your move.

Prepare for collection

Check the current instructions supplied for your booking, including fuel, keys, alarm operation and belongings. Confirm any items you want to leave in the car rather than assuming they are included or covered. Photograph the vehicle and keep the collection and delivery contacts reachable.

Questions about this route

Can I request transport for a caravan or motorhome?

Use the vehicle quote form and specify the vehicle type and dimensions. If you cannot describe it accurately in the form, contact us before proceeding; a standard car quote does not establish suitability for a caravan or motorhome.

What if the car cannot be driven for loading?

Describe the fault and loading limitations before requesting a service. See the non-running vehicle guide; availability must be confirmed for the job.

Is an arrival date guaranteed?

Only rely on the timing commitment stated in your quote and booking conditions. Ask about any deadline before accepting, rather than assuming a general route estimate guarantees delivery.

Request a quote for your direction, or contact us with questions about the seller, handover or vehicle.
