Enclosed transport and connecting legs

Enclosed transport is available between capital-city depots in both directions. Townsville is also part of this enclosed depot network and is treated as a capital-city depot for quoting purposes.

For Melbourne–Sydney, enclosed transport is available between Melbourne depot and Sydney depot in both directions. Any connecting address pickup or delivery outside that depot leg uses a standard carrier. Moving Cars can arrange those connections as part of the full journey; an address-to-address booking is not automatically enclosed for every leg.

What determines the Melbourne to Sydney price?

Distance matters, but it is not the only pricing input. The quote also depends on the exact suburbs or towns, the vehicle’s size and condition, the available carrier, the pickup window and whether you choose door or depot handover.

Some carriers are not equipped with winches or other loading equipment, so a non-running or non-rolling vehicle needs to be matched with a suitable option.

Collection in Melbourne or regional Victoria

For a door collection, provide a safe address and a contact who can answer the driver’s call. Large carriers cannot always enter narrow residential streets, underground car parks, steep driveways or areas with low branches. The driver may arrange a nearby handover point when access is unsuitable.

Delivery in Sydney

The delivery contact should be ready to receive the driver’s call and agree on a safe meeting point. As with collection, the address may need to change to a nearby accessible road if a large transporter cannot legally or safely reach the nominated property.

Do not arrange an inflexible onward appointment around an estimated delivery date. Long-distance transit uses public roads, and the final timing can move because of traffic, weather, road closures, carrier schedules or delays earlier in the run.

Preparing the car before collection

Every available quote offers a Goods in Car option. Select it on your quote before booking if you want to transport belongings; no separate request is needed. Follow the selected carrier’s weight allowance and packing instructions.

Prepare a petrol or diesel vehicle with a quarter of a tank of fuel. Have your EV charged for handover and follow any charge-level requirements supplied by the carrier.

Use this checklist before the Melbourne handover:

1. Remove valuables and secure any belongings included in the booked Goods in Car option.
2. Make sure the battery is reliable and the vehicle starts without assistance, or disclose its non-running condition before booking.
3. Check that the tyres are inflated and that the car rolls, steers and brakes.

Buying a car in Melbourne for delivery to Sydney

Interstate transport can widen the range of cars available to a Sydney buyer, but the advertised price is only part of the decision. Compare the purchase price, transport quote, collection timing, possible storage charges and estimated delivery window before deciding whether the interstate car offers better value than a local one.

If a private seller is handing over the vehicle, confirm that they will answer the carrier’s call and have the keys ready. For a dealer or auction pickup, complete the release authority before collection. Auction houses may require paid invoices, identification, lot details or written authority naming the collecting party.

Timing, delays and insurance

Transit estimates start from collection or depot drop-off and are measured in business days (Monday to Friday, excluding public holidays). Estimates are not guaranteed collection or delivery appointments.

Weather, floods, road closures, peak demand and carrier schedules can delay the journey.

Notify your insurer that the vehicle will travel by carrier and ask how your own policy applies during transport. Do not assume a quote automatically provides cover for every type of loss or delay.

Compare the right service, not only the lowest number
